Hooked on Books! – A whole school approach to literature and developing a love of reading

1 day course

“It is not true we have only one life to live, if we can read, we can live as many lives and as many kinds of lives as we wish.” S.I. Hayakawa

This inspiring and practical session will draw upon the latest research and best practice in laying down the foundations for happy and successful readers.

Supporting all children to develop a love of books and reading is one of the most powerful tools we can give to children.  But do we utilise shared books enough to explore in depth the concepts and ethical dilemmas presented?

During the day, we will look at how the school can achieve high outcomes in reading, by taking it further and teaching children the way they learn best – through play, practical experience, drama and the creative use of high quality texts as the central point of an inquiry.

Course participants will:

  • Use a shared novel to develop a unit of inquiry to explore ethics, perspective and real issues that matter.
  • Gain ideas for a range of play and drama based activities designed to enhance children’s reading skills and a deeper understanding of the texts they are engaging with.
  • Learn effective strategies for igniting the interest of those reluctant to engage in reading activities.
  • Experiment with ways to use a shared text to explore complex issues.
  • Emotionally connect with the experience of sharing a text with others.

Target audience: Literacy Co-ordinators, Phase Leaders, Teachers

A requirement of this course is for participants to read a specific text (child’s novel) prior to the training day.
