Explorers and Adventurers – Outdoor Learning for PS2 and PS3

1 day course

‘Outdoor Learning’ is a broad term used to describe outdoor play, whole school grounds projects, environmental education, recreational and adventure activities, personal and social development programmes, expeditions, team building, education for sustainability, adventure therapy … and more.’ Roger Greenaway

This course provides a platform for exploring the possibilities in the outdoors for older learners.

Outdoor Learning values direct experience as it provides a dramatic contrast to the indoor environment for learners of all ages.   It can be more motivating and inviting.  It can have a greater impact and credibility for children who are deemed to be ‘nature deficient’.

During this practical course we explore how, through skilled teaching and facilitation, outdoor learning readily becomes a stimulating source of fascination and inquiry.  We consider the practicalities and barriers which need addressing within different contexts.

Course participants will:

  • Consider how the outdoor environment can support the development of skills and open the door to the unexpected for learners of all ages.
  • Explore the potential of their own school site and community context.
  • Understand how first hand, everyday experiences can contribute to developing ‘Contexts for Learning’ with children.
  • Consider ways to promote higher-order, learner-initiated opportunities in the outdoors.
  • Discuss the adult’s role in supporting learning outdoors for older children.
  • Share tips and ideas to take back and start the next day!

Target Audience: Primary Teachers in PS2 and PS3, and School Leaders

This course can be delivered in-school only.

Please be prepared for outdoor learning and come suitably clothed.
