Succeeding or Learning? Differentiation within CfW

1 day course

How does your current approach to differentiation reflect your pedagogical approach?

Is deep level learning being secured for all learners or are pupils deemed to be ‘successful’ against narrow, shallow criteria?

During this one-day course we will explore how differentiating for ability rather than by ability reflects the pedagogy of Curriculum for Wales, and leads to deeper, more meaningful, connected learning episodes.

This is an ideal focus for schools that are interested in, or that have started, an Inquiry Based Learning approach for implementing CfW.

Course participants will:

  • Review the key messages contained within the Pedagogical Principles and how these relate to differentiated practice.
  • Explore the advantages and disadvantages of the ‘classic model’ for differentiation versus an inquiry-based model of differentiation.
  • Develop questions and effective ‘think points’ for differentiation within a small group or class inquiry situation, as well as pupil-created questions.
  • Consider the elements required for differentiating for ability and how the elements connect to a success rubric.
  • Identify practical next steps for their own professional learning and whole school development.
