Reach for the Sky!  – Inspiring young writers – a whole school approach to writing

1 day course

“The power of a writer is that he is a god of sorts. He can create his own worlds and populate them with his own people, all by the powers of his imagination.’ Bangambiki Habyarimana

It’s that simple; children learn to write by writing. Children need many opportunities to write in a variety of ways and for a variety of purpose. They need time to explore, experiment, and play with writing. They need time to draft and redraft and talk about their writing with people they trust and care about.

Explore and discover how learning in this area can be improved by building upon, rather than compromising, children’s natural tendency to play and explore.

With clear messages and a ‘can do’ approach it is a day not to be missed!

Course participants will:

  • Explore the key elements needed to become a confident and effective writer.
  • Review a structure to support budding writers in planning appropriately for these elements.
  • Learn how to provide challenge through everyday writing experiences that incorporate the passions of young children and older learners.
  • Share effective strategies for engaging reluctant writers.
  • Participate in a range of inspirational activities that can be easily implemented in practice.

Target audience: Literacy Co-ordinators, Phase Leaders, Teachers
