Whichever phonics and spelling programme you use in school, this course will strengthen your toolkit and enable you to actively engage learners in early mark making, spelling, reading and writing.

This one day course will provide you with an approach that provides structure and yet gives teachers flexibility around the teaching of phonics and spelling.

Course participants will:

• Understand the development of mark making in young children.
• Re-visit the key principles of teaching phonics and spelling effectively.
• Reflect on the phonic and spelling knowledge and skills required by children at different stages of development.
• Consider the next steps for children when they secure good phonic understanding.
• Look at spelling beyond PS1 and 2 and PS3.
• Consider what to do when progress becomes impeded.
• Share ideas for activities and experiences that support learning.
