Meeting the needs of all pupils simultaneously is the greatest challenge for teachers in our increasingly complex school contexts. During this one-day event with Professor Yeap Ban Har, we will explore the theoretical and practical challenges of differentiation – getting it right for everyone!
So, do we see differentiation in mathematics as acceleration for some pupils, and deceleration for others? Or, do we re-frame our thinking to ensure that we meet the needs of struggling and advanced learners at the same time?
This one-day workshop-style conference investigates how to embrace ‘differentiation as enrichment’. You’ll learn methods for whole-class teaching that differentiation by ‘depth of conceptual understanding’ rather than ‘acceleration of content’. Reflecting the pedagogy of the new curriculum, through hands-on activities, you’ll discover how to vary and re-frame mathematical challenges to accommodate struggling and advanced students through conceptual depth and high quality questioning.
No rote learning, no procedural rehearsal, no acceleration of content, just excellent teaching based on the work of Jerome Bruner, Lev Vygotsky, Zoltan Dienes and Howard Gardner. It follows the C.P.A. approach used throughout Singapore Maths. Through a series of hands-on challenges linked to evidenced-based theory, the world of ‘Differentiation as Enrichment’ opens up.
Teachers will leave this course eager to teach differentiation by depth, and in doing so ensure high levels of engagement and well-being in all pupils.
Please note; it is beneficial (but not essential) that teachers who attend ‘Differentiation as Enrichment’, have previously attended ‘Straight to the Top with Singapore Maths’, either in this round of training or in previous years.
